The SAFESPOT Project is co-funded by the European Commission Information Society and Media and supported by EUCAR.

In the SAFEPROBE sub-project an in-vehicle platform was developed to provide safety-related information about the vehicle and its environment. Examples of information sources providing input to the SAFEPROBE platform are:

  • Vehicle dynamics and body networks
  • Occupant safety systems
  • On-board surround sensors
  • SP1
  • Global satellite-positioning, static map and navigation systems
  • Messages from other SAFESPOT vehicles and static road-side units transmitted using wireless ad hoc networking technologies.

This information is filtered, classified and fused into a standardized local dynamic map which models the environment of the equipped vehicle. This required the determination of the properties of objects (including localization and path prediction) and the determination of complex relationships between them (such as the detection of traffic and meteorological events). This information is used by the vehicle-based safety applications which were developed by the SCOVA sub-project. Public interfaces, messages and protocols were specified and validated to achieve inter-operability with other SAFESPOT subsystems.
